Haircuts – Why I Only Go Once A Year

June 15, 2011 by davinca

So I had my “once a year” haircut the other day and once again I am reminded as to why I only go once a year and why I was slightly nervous that day.

As many of you know I have long hair that I love and am savouring for as long as I can before it gets old and scraggly and I have to have the chop.

I discuss with her that I wanted nothing off the length and just wanted shape, shorter layers and style.

All seemed cool, she was a beautiful sweet girl and I felt safe in her hands. Whilst cutting she asked:

“Do people often ask you if your hair is real?

To which I answered:

“Why yes, yes they do..

I always wonder if that means

  1. it looks like skanky extensions, or
  2. it’s just long and they wonder if it’s real.

She told me that my hair was gorgeous, I felt proud and she continued to cut.

Whilst cutting, a new client sat next to me and was having clip in extensions put in. I enquired about them as I had read the other day that Kim Kardashian has them in (ahh that’s why her hair looks so full).

I was quite interested as although my hair is nice and long it is also quite flat and I could do with some vavavoom.

Me with Hair Extensions

At the end of my haircut she put the clip-ons in for me to see what they felt like (see the picture above – what do you think?). I loved them but for $220 after already have spent $150 for a cut and colour I couldn’t justify it. I would have to wait and save up for them… maybe…

This is where the dissolution begun though. After she took the extensions out I had a quick look in the mirror, the cut looked good and I left and headed home. It was at home that I realised my hair had been thinned out dramatically! It now looked like I did have skanky extensions in!! What had she done?? The top half looks great, the bottom half/my length looks ughh *insert sad face here*

Did she cut it this way so I would buy them? No she was so nice, that can’t be… Is this the look going these days?

So now I am sad. My fears of the hairdresser once again confirmed. Oh and now saving up for clip-ons as it would take years for my hair to get back to how it was.

If anyone knows of some good clip-ons at a good price and a good hairdresser plleeassse let me know..

I won’t be getting my hair cut again for a while that’s for sure.

When hair is one length you have the benefit of every hair on the head adding to the fullness at the ends. As soon as you layer it, you reduce the number of hairs reaching all the way to the bottom – which is why you get it more full-looking up top (shorter, shaped, less weighty/flat) but inevitably thinned at the ends below. Good luck with your next annual haircut. Most long-haired girls could sympathise. Who hasn’t asked for a little trim and been shocked to find over a years’ growth chopped off with the excuse, “Just neatening up these horrible split ends!”

      Hi Susan,

I am so sorry for such a late reply!!
      Thank you for your comment.
I had a hairdresser look at it last year and she agreed that it was more than layered it was in her words “butchered” !!
It is on it’s way to being repaired at last.. Fortunately I found someone who was able to help. I am defiantly going to check out Tom, that Danielle suggested. Fingers crossed lol.

      Thanks again
